Laptops, customer service and birthdays.Laptops...
It took me about 2 hours this morning but I finally got my new laptop configured to how I like my settings. Bookmarks, installed a firefox browser, updated some programs and got rid of a number of programs/software (junk) that the laptop came with. Why do computer manufacturers see it fit to put all this unwanted junk on their computers? It's like buying a box of cereal, only to find dehydrated milk in the package..yuk!
Did I just say YUK?... my children are rubbing off on me.
Here's the coolest part of my day so far. I multi-tasked..watched some of the "Masters" on tv, while I worked on the laptop in the family room. Yep, laptops must be a telecommuter's best friend. That, added with wireless internet! Speaking about wireless internet.. have you installed one lately? This is so easy to do. I had some reservations when I bought the new router, since it took me a few hours when I did a wired network a few years back. It took me all of 5 minutes this morning to get things up and running.
Laptop and wireless internet.. I can't wait for the summer when I can take my work in the back yard. Let's just hope the house to the back go to their cottage very often this summer, so there'll be less noise. This adds a new dimension to my work from home career!
Customer Service..
We always hear about the terrible customer service we are sometimes lucky to experience, so today I want to give some praise instead.
Friday I went into a local "Future Shop" store here in Hamilton to do some pricing on laptops, since I wanted to purchase one. As I walked into the computer department I was met by an associate, who greeted me and asked if he could help. Long story short, I was quite clear to the associate that I was only pricing at this point and was not going to be making a purchase today. Kuma (got the name while he lived in Japan a few years back .. he told us) took the time to answer the barrage of questions I had about the model he recommended and all with a pleasant and knowing attitude. Hat's off to Kuma for a job well done! It's the first time I've walked away from a store, knowing all I could possibly know about a product and with the a comfortable feeling that this will be a good purchase for me. After all, I'd be spending over $1300 on this new computer. As I found out later, Kuma was indeed on a commission based salary and depended on the sale, but at no time did he pressure me to make a purchase. Even though he spent over 40 mins with me, during which time there were other associates in the department making sales. I did go back yesterday and make the purchase .. though Kuma wasn't there, I was reassured by the associate that was there, that I wanted Kuma to get the commission on the sale.
It would be nice to have this experience every time I go into a store!
Birthdays..
This weekend there were 2 birthdays to celebrate.
India, our youngest daughter turned a BIG 10.. double digits! and Chanice, my cousin turned 14. Do I feel old..nah! Happy birthday boy!
So how was your weekend?

Chris,
Thanks for sharing this story! I used to work on commission too, but was never the pushy type either. I don't like to be "forced" into a sale as a customer, so I never did it to my customers.
I featured your post on my customer service blog and even gave you an award :)
By the way, I love your website. I have added your link to my Online Business Resources blog.
Hello Maria,
Thanks for stopping by. Great to hear that you also featured my post and gave me a link on your site.
All the best.
Chris..
p.s. I'm now officially an award winner ;) "EXCELLENT" picture Mr. Burns on the Simpsons saying it.
