How to stay focused!
November 29th, 2006 by Chris De La Rosa

Thought I’d share some tips on staying focus in this “work from home Wednesday” blog entry..

Write out a daily task list and plan your day. There’s nothing like a task list sitting next to you to keep you focused. When you have a list of the things you need to accomplish in a day, having that close to you constantly reminding you of what needs to be done is a great way of keeping on track.

A few others to mention…

Start working at the same time. Treat work from home days like regular workdays: get up, get dressed, and be “at your desk” at the usual time.

Establish a schedule. Keep work hours similar to the ones you would keep if you were working at your office.

Limit distractions. Be careful not to replace office-based interruptions with home-based ones (such as children, neighbors, and friends).

Plan ahead. Take the appropriate work home. Some work may be better suited for the home office than other work, so be sure to plan the work from home a day ahead.

Take breaks. Plan time to get up and move around. Consider going for a walk or a run during your lunch break to keep your mind fresh. I try to take at least 45mins to go to the gym.

Another reason to work from home?
November 28th, 2006 by Chris De La Rosa

Stumbled across this in the news this am…

Brazilian city seeks to curb rush-hour groping with women-only buses

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) - In an effort to curb rush-hour groping on crowded buses, a major Brazilian city is about to introduce women-only buses in its public transportation system.

The city council of Goiania, capital of the central state Goias, unanimously approved a bill calling for women-only buses during morning and evening rush hours in the city of 1.1 million residents, councilman Mauricio Beraldo said Friday.”The beautiful women of Goiania are constantly being sexually harassed on our overcrowded buses by men who seem unable to control themselves,” Beraldo, the bill’s sponsor, said by telephone from his office 917 kilometres north of Sao Paulo.

“Over the years, I have received countless complaints from irate and nervous women complaining of men who take advantage of crowded bus conditions to fondle their bodies,” Beraldo said.

“This is why I decided to introduce a bill calling for the introduction of buses that will carry only women.”

Mayor Iris Rezende is expected to sign the bill into law by Dec. 15 and the all-female buses should be circulating by mid-2007, Beraldo said.

Details on how the women-only bus system will work will be discussed in the coming weeks, he said. He declined to provide further information until the bill is approved by the mayor, who was not immediately available for comment.

Rio de Janeiro’s subway system started using women-only cars in 2006 after several complaints of sexual harassment. The all-female cars circulate all day, while in Mexico City cars are designated for women and children only during rush hours.

In Japan, where groping of women is a long-standing problem, 26 lines operated by 12 companies have introduced women-only cars, mainly in big cities.

In Cairo, at least two cars in the front of every train are reserved for women. However, women and men ride together in buses.

Everyone knows someone
November 27th, 2006 by Chris De La Rosa

Hope you got some deals with all those sales last Friday and over the weekend. Must have been fun fighting for parking spots etc :) We spent most of our Christmas shopping fund on the vacation in Jan, so NO shopping here!

It’s Pet Peeve Monday…

You must know someone… a friend, family member, relative someone you just can’t count on. The person who will not only NOT support you, they will never act on their own to defuse a situation. This person is guaranteed to add more stress to any situation that they could be helping with.

One piece of advice… if you can’t help, please move on. No need pretending you care or want to help and just adding to the situation.

Chris…

p.s. rode over 200 miles the last 3 weeks, but never got anywhere. However I did loose 4lbs. Maybe this week I’ll try the treadmill.

Like chickens to corn.
November 23rd, 2006 by Chris De La Rosa

We were down in Buffalo NY a couple days ago to do some shopping (take advantage of the strong Canadian dollar and good American prices) and I saw something that took me back to my childhood.

We had a country home when I was growing up in Trinidad, which meant that we also have several ducks and chickens. At one point we even have a couple pigs and goats.  Let’s just say that we liked his meat natural :)

We used to share chores around the house since my dad worked in construction and my mom had her own business so we all basically chipped in. One of the things I was responsible for was feeding the chickens. Have you ever fed chickens? There I would be with the corn (you’ve never had good chicken till you had corn fed) and as I tossed it on the ground the chickens would just swoop to it. There were times when they would even try to grab it out of my hands :)

Back to Buffalo… there we were in Tops (grocery store) and this worker was coming out of the back with a shopping cart full of turkeys to stock the freezer. Just like when I was a kid with our chickens… shoppers just flocked around the poor guy, grabbing up the frozen turkeys like corn. It was funny to see how these people went crazy for the turkeys. Must have been some sort of on-the-spot special price.

Have a Great Thanksgiving!

Chris..

p.s. we celebrated ours back in October in Canada.

Take time to prioritize!
November 22nd, 2006 by Chris De La Rosa

With the holiday season quickly approaching don’t forget to not neglect your work. When you work from home it’s very easy to forget that this is your actual job and stray from money generating tasks. Before you head out shopping or planning elaborate dinner parties, remember what’s most important and get your work done.

Make a list of all the things you want to get accomplished for the entire day or week. List both work and other activities so you get a clear picture on how busy your schedule will be. Then take a closer look at your work activities… list them in order of importance. Now before you step out to hit the malls for “Back Friday” or other holiday shopping, make sure you complete at least 5 of those important work related tasks.

Prioritize… this is your Work From Home Wednesday tip!

Chris…
