What you should consider when setting goals for 2008.
December 29th, 2007 by Chris De La Rosa

Goals are set on a number of different levels: First you create your “big picture” of what you want to do with your life, and what large-scale goals you want to achieve. Second, you break these down into the smaller and smaller targets that you must hit so that you reach your lifetime goals. Finally, once you have your plan, you start working to achieve it.

*  State each goal as a positive statement: Express your goals positively - ‘Execute this technique well’ is a much better goal than ‘Don’t make this stupid mistake.’

* Be precise: Set a precise goal, putting in dates, times and amounts so that you can measure achievement. If you do this, you will know exactly when you have achieved the goal, and can take complete satisfaction from having achieved it.

* Set priorities: When you have several goals, give each a priority. This helps you to avoid feeling overwhelmed by too many goals, and helps to direct your attention to the most important ones.

* Write goals down: This crystallizes them and gives them more force.

* Keep operational goals small: Keep the low-level goals you are working towards small and achievable. If a goal is too large, then it can seem that you are not making progress towards it. Keeping goals small and incremental gives more opportunities for reward. Derive today’s goals from larger ones.

* Set performance goals, not outcome goals: You should take care to set goals over which you have as much control as possible. There is nothing more dispiriting than failing to achieve a personal goal for reasons beyond your control. In business, these could be bad business environments or unexpected effects of government policy. In sport, for example, these reasons could include poor judging, bad weather, injury, or just plain bad luck. If you base your goals on personal performance, then you can keep control over the achievement of your goals and draw satisfaction from them.

* Set realistic goals: It is important to set goals that you can achieve. All sorts of people (employers, parents, media, society) can set unrealistic goals for you. They will often do this in ignorance of your own desires and ambitions. Alternatively you may set goals that are too high, because you may not appreciate either the obstacles in the way, or understand quite how much skill you need to develop to achieve a particular level of performance.

Spend some time brainstorming these, and then select one goal in each category that best reflects what you want to do. Then consider trimming again so that you have a small number of really significant goals on which you can focus.

As you do this, make sure that the goals that you have set are ones that you genuinely want to achieve, not ones that your parents, family, or employers might want (if you have a partner, you probably want to consider what he or she wants, however make sure you also remain true to yourself!

The days after Christmas.
December 27th, 2007 by Chris De La Rosa

Hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season and didn’t break the bank trying to impress others with expensive gifts. With just a few days left in 2007 are you working on an action plan for 2008? Not to be confused with a “resolution”, since we ALL know how those end up :)

Take some time the next few days and write down on paper the things you’d like to accomplish in 2008, remember not to mention things that are out of your reach. But don’t sell yourself short - dream big.

For all the Canadians who bitched about losing their “Christmas heritage”… suck on salt. With time brings change, so accept those changes or be left in it’s shadow!

Merry Christmas

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Last day to max out your credit cards.
December 24th, 2007 by Chris De La Rosa

It’s the day before Christmas and you still have room on your credit card?? Did you not get the memo that Christmas is ALL about stressing yourself out about who you bought for and didn’t? Get in that car right now, head over to the mall and give Mr. Visa a final work-out. After all, the best part is getting that nice thick envelope with pages and pages of charges in January.

If you still have people to impress and show that you “love”, forget the malls…

Send electronic gift certificates or gift cards. Another option is an online gift certificate that gets sent out via e-mail. Many retailers offer them, and their convenience to you is unparalleled – so long as you feel reasonably comfortable that your recipient won’t mistake your electronic gift for spam. Some retailers allow the certificates to be used only on their Web sites, not in their stores, so make sure the person on the receiving end is comfortable shopping online. You’ll often have until around noon on Dec. 24 to order the e-gift cards and guarantee their timely arrival.

Which professional do you distrust the most?
December 21st, 2007 by Chris De La Rosa

I read an article a couple days ago where they listed the top 10 most distrusted professions and I agreed with most (see the list below). The 2 I would add to the list are  Internet Marketers (ones who makes all these rubbish claims about all the money the could help you make) and people who sell on eBay. I’ve been burnt 2 times on eBay, where I paid for stuff and later found out there were bogus auctions or the product was not “real”, but mere copies. BTW, I got my money back after a couple years and reports to the FBI department who looks after internet fraud.
Who would you add to the list of professions you distrust?

Here is the list according to the article I read:

10. Police Officer
9. Journalist
8. Celebrities
7. Handymen (with sticky fingers)
6. Agent/Manager
5. Telemarketers
4. Lawyer
3. Mechanic
2. Politician
1. Used car salesman

Tip # 2 for being more successful in 2008.
December 21st, 2007 by Chris De La Rosa

Further to my post a couple days ago about “Time Management“, here’s another tip which will see you achieve more in 2008. GET HELP! You may feel that you’re capable of doing everything and most likely you can. Sure you can answer every support email that comes in, sure you can build websites to run mini promotions and I’m sure you can manage all the advertising campaigns you have running. But what is it costing you and your business? Try not to HOG your time doing things which prevents you from “generating cash” activities.

Outsource the mundane things. A virtual assistant or an outsourced employee is skilled in many areas, comes fairly cheap and the majority of them are very hard working and dedicated. This will free-up a lot of your time to concentrate on revenue generating activities.

Thought of the day : Life is like a jar of jalapeños . What you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow
