What the heck is a Squidoo lens and how are people making money from them?
March 24th, 2008 by Chris De La Rosa

Usually when you hear people talk about making money using the internet it’s either through an ecommerce site, blog, affiliate marketing or selling stuff on an online auction like Ebay. However, if you’re looking for an even easier way to make some extra cash, why not create a Squidoo lens? Why?

make money with your squidoo lens

- it’s very simple to get started (no need for any programming skills.. a 5yr old can do this)
- all you need is a topic that you like or enjoy

- it’s free (no need for expensive hosting costs)

- you and add several cash generating features to it

- the more you share it with friends, the bigger it can get (remember the bigger it gets, the better your chances are at really cashing in.

- you can easily become an expert on your topic of choice

- It’s FUN!

Creating an account at Squidoo is extremely simple. Go to the sign up page and follow the easy directions. Enter some basic info about yourself, and click the “Continue” button.

Note: When entering your personal info, be sure to enter what you want internet users to see. Thus, your “desired username” might be a condensed form of your company name, or the username you use on other public websites. Maintain your brand. In my case I used “Virtual Worker”

You’ve now registered. I told you it was simple.

>>>>>>> Let’s create your lens <<<<<<
Now you can be a lensmaster. Click the button to “Create a Lens.” There are several steps to the process, so we’ll take them one at a time.

1. Enter your lens’ subject. What you select is up to you, but don’t forget your topic of choice. (what you’ll be speaking about.. in my case my lens is about working from home) There are no limits, so don’t hold back on the topic you’d like your lens to be about.

2. Now Squidoo wants to know what type of lens you need. The lens is customizable later, so we’ll go with the first choice - “I want to get the word out about…” It provides the basic info you need to get started.

3. This step is crucial for marketing. First, select a title for your lens. Squidoo enters your subject by default. You might leave that or slightly alter it. You’ll want to have your company name in the title and a keyword or two, such as your primary product.

Second, you get to pick the URL for your lens. For Ted’s computers, you’d enter something like “computers-Ted” You cannot enter spaces; only use lowercase letters and hyphens. Be sure you like what you pick, since it’s not changeable.

Third, pick a category for your lens. If your product or service fits in one of the categories like “cars & trucks” or “entertainment,” select that. As a fall back, select “business.”

Fourth, rate your lens. Since this is a personal site, you should definitely make it fit the “G” rating. You want as much exposure as possible.

4. Enter keywords for your lens. These help search engines and users find your lens. Make sure they’re good. For Ted’s Computer Shop, the “best keyword” would be “computers.” Go ahead and enter the optional ones. Maybe pick “computer tips,” “computer help,” and “computer sales.”

After you enter the security code, you’re ready to see the lens. Click “Done!”

Your next task will be to edit the lens you created. Here’s a tip, while at the Squidoo page, do a search for lens with similar topics as the one you want to build your lens about. From the results you can get ideas for how to better design your lens and what to avoid so you don’t repeat the same layout and content. Don’t forget to include your cash generating modules, so you can start making money form your unique Squidoo lens.

This and that and then some, this long weekend.
March 21st, 2008 by Chris De La Rosa

For the readers who celebrate/observe Easter, I wanted to wish you all the best as you spend time enjoying whatever your traditions are. I saw that John Chow did a charity drive to raise funds to help feed some less fortunate… wish I had seen his drive earlier so I could contribute. I guess I don’t need an event to contribute, so I’ll donate something to the local food bank. If you’re having family and friends over for dinner this weekend as the norm with many in Canada and the US, cherish the time. Not many of us are given that opportunity… but that’s family politics for ya! (I’ll never fully understand the North American understanding of family)

As we end a great week at Obzokee.com, which saw us discuss many areas of working from home and making money on the internet… I’d like to remind you to leave us a comment if you have any questions, suggestions or would like to contribute to this wonderful community we’re trying to develop.

Before I go I’d like to take a moment to say a couple happy birthdays to… Our daughter Kieana turned 15 yesterday and Caron will be one year closer to her pension cheque tomorrow. All the best ladies, here’s a little something for you…

Will you be the last one standing?
March 20th, 2008 by Chris De La Rosa

My new favorite show is one called “Last Man Standing“. I came across the last 20 mins of an episode about 3 weeks ago on The Discovery Channel and though it’s a reality show (I know I usually hate that stuff), this one is not too bad. I guess it’s my luck to only catch the last 20 minutes or so for the 3 episodes I seen so far, but this week had the fellas running down a mountain (looked like somewhere in South America) with a huge piece of ice strapped to their backs. What makes this even more difficult, is the fact that they’re high in the mountains, where breathing is very difficult.

The athletes get the chance to train with the locals prior to each event (They travel the world looking for ancient endurance sports) so they get a bit of experience before each event. Then they’re placed on teams with locals and compete for points.

As I watched this week’s episode, I made some comparisons to everyday netpreneur life. This is a constant challenge, the best you can do is associate, peek from behind the monitors, or be trained by someone who’s already doing this with success. Kinda like how the athletes on the show get some training from the locals who’s been doing that event all their lives, before having to do the actual event for points. But even after the training they receive they still have to go out there and perform the task. Keep in mind that you can only learn so much in one week, so it’s learn-as-you-go attitude you must develop and implement.

To survie as a netpreneur you must be willing to:

- learn from others - FAST! Associate yourself with people who you can learn from (mentors, communities, ezines, blogs etc)
- adapt to new things

- be a leader… don’t wait for others to doing something and then.. copy or follow

- work hard at it.
This week’s winner was not the strongest runner, but he was persistent and never gave up. he really took in what he was taught by his trainer and stuck to his game plan. Maybe we can all learn something from this!

Here’s a video clip of the show.

When do you say NO to potential cash generating opportunities?
March 19th, 2008 by Chris De La Rosa

I recall my mom saying to me many years ago “son, don’t bite off more than you can chew“, she starts everything with son, when she speaks to me on a serious note. But I think I’ve gone ahead and done just that! 2008 is the year I’ve decided to hit this netpreneur life from all angles. This means creating income sources from various websites and communities. Over the past 2 months I’ve been wearing the thinking-cap for days at a time and I’ve come up several ideas to get me going. The trouble is, I kinda started all of them at the same time. So I have programmers (outsourced) working on 3 new projects for me. Which means working closely with then through the entire process .. concept - design - troubleshooting - launch. Then I’m in the process of hiring a couple freelance writers and an assistant. Oh how I look forward to… the task - getting them up to speed on the help I need.

Added to my internet existence, I have a few offline projects I’ve been playing with. We wanted to open a restaurant late last year, here in Hamilton but finding the right location is keeping us back. I have a couple investment opportunities in the Caribbean that’s been placed on my plate for review. Then this morning I had a conference call with a couple friends, one from Miami and the other from Trinidad, with another opportunity they wanted me to partner with them on.

Here’s the icing on the cake.. I want to go to culinary school!

TIP! - Don’t even consider any new projects without first completing the one you’re working on. Sure, the new ones will sound very inviting but the stress of having to look after them all is killer! So back to the drawing board for me. I have to decide which one takes priority and complete then one at a time.

Why is it that everything relating to working from home, branded as hogwash?
March 18th, 2008 by Chris De La Rosa

One word - CONFUSION!

Due to all the scams and the desperation by those hoping to begin a work from home career, there’s much confusion. What’s real and what’s not? Who’s waiting around the next “click” to get my money with false promises? You may find this brutal, but I’m being truthful. Chances are you’ll never work from home and you’ll be stuck in that 9-5er  you hate with a passion, the rest of your life.  Your only hopes are..

- convincing your current employer to consider some flex time for your position.

- finding a job that’s 100% telecommuting from the time you’re hired and I assure you that you’ve just been placed in a line with a few 100,000 people (if not millions). Job seekers from all over the world are in the same position as you, being that the Internet created this global career village.

-  using the internet, your skills and your  time to make money. This is where you bring out the entrepreneurial spirit that’s trapped somewhere deep inside you. This is the route most of us take, since you’re only limited by the limits you place on yourself. This route can be very stressful, risky and will take up a lot of your waking time. But when you get that first check in the mail… aahh this is probably how fine wine drinkers feel after that rare vintage hits the back of their mouth? BTW, there are many possibilities when it comes to generating an income online besides affiliate marketing. And over time we’ll explore many such possibilities.
HOW CAN I SUCCESSFULLY MAKE MONEY FROM HOME ON THE INTERNET?

Stay tuned to Obzokee.com, it’s that simple! We’ll not really, but it’s a good start. This blog is dedicated to cover not only my experience and daily quest at being a top netpreneur but I’ll share various revenue generating tips and other details which will help you be successful as a telecommuter. Basically, I’ll be the “lab rat” and you’ll learn from my mistakes and success.

I’d really appreciate it if you could help build the popularity of this blog by clicking on each one and adding it to your favorite bookmarking service. Make it a productive day!
