What ever happened to the winter-beater?
October 29th, 2007 by Chris De La Rosa

We were driving out to get the girls their pumpkin to carve when I saw this old (crap) car in front of us at the stop lights. “Must be a winter beater” I thought to myself. That got me thinking, when was the last time I heard someone use the term “winter beater”. The piece of junk  many people would purchase to drive around during the winter to save their new cars from the salt and the other damaging effects of the winter. Was the trusty “winter beater” replaced with those new SUVs and mega trucks everyone now seems to be driving?

Gardasil update.

Further to my post about deciding if we should allow our daughter to get the Gardasil needle, Caron had time to speak with our doctor on the issue. Basically she said that she recommends it and is giving it to patients at her office. But here is the kicker… Do you think she gave it to her daughter yet? NOPE! I think her reason/excuse was that she keeps putting it off or was it she was waiting for a better needle to come out. Whatever the reason, you’d think since she’s recommending it, she would be first to give it to her daughter if it’s really a good idea. So the uncertainty continues.

Funnies

Back to the drive to get the girls their pumpkins. Overheard Tehya say that her friend (can’t recall her name) finally got over hear fear of “apple sauce” APPLE SAUCE? I’m afraid of heights, tight spaces and snakes, but apple sauce? Here’s the part I found funny. Seems when she was a child/baby her mom would put her medicine in apple sauce to mask the taste, so every time she saw apple sauce she would think it’s medicine coming her way. I guess she figured out it wasn’t just apple sauce her mom would feed her :)

Vacation time?

Here’s a peek at one of the islands I traded to come to Canada. Tobago is probably one of the few places in the Caribbean that is not over-run by tourists.

One of the harder decisions we’ve had to make as parents.
October 12th, 2007 by Chris De La Rosa

Today our daughter who’s in grade eight is supposed to be taking needle 1 of 3 of Gardasil.  If you’re not familiar with this injection;

Gardasil is designed to prevent infection with HPV types 16, 18, 6, and 11. HPV types 16 and 18 cause about 70% of HPV-related cervical cancer cases. In addition, some types of HPV, particularly type 16, have been found to be associated with oropharyngeal squamous-cell carcinoma, a form of throat cancer. HPV types 6 and 11 cause about 90% of genital wart cases. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection causes virtually all cases of cervical cancer, the 7th most common cause of death from cancer among women worldwide.

Until there is more information about the longevity of the  drug and  information about the possible dangers from longterm side effects, we’ve decided to prevent our daughter from getting the needle today. It’s not as if we’re saying we’ll never give permission for her or her younger sister to get the needle, we’re just waiting a bit to see if more information will be released so we can then make a better decision.

What are your thoughts on this drug? Would you allow your 13yr daughter to get it, since it’s so new to the market?
