Give your ‘gray matter’ even more of a boost.

Foods to boost your brain power

* Antioxidants: Foods and supplements containing antioxidants (e.g., omega-3 fatty acids, phytochemicals, catechins) could boost your brain health and longevity. Omega-3 fatty acids found in many kinds of seafood, including salmon, halibut, scallops, have been linked to reduced brain inflammation and nerve cell regeneration. Not into seafood? Antioxidants can be found in less fishy sources, too: darkly coloured vegetables and fruits contain phytochemicals (blueberries, in particular), and green tea is packed with catechins.

* B vitamins: B is for brain, that’s for sure. The B family of vitamins is a rich source of food for the nervous system. The messages our brain sends back and forth between our nerves depend on B-complex vitamins, especially folic acid, vitamin B6, and choline. Finding foods full of B-complex vitamins isn’t too hard. Folic acid can be found in dark greens, including spinach, asparagus, romaine lettuce, and turnip or mustard greens. Loads of beans contain folic acid, too. Try black, garbanzo, or pinto for a folic acid feast. Crack an egg for choline: egg yolks contain this B-vitamin in abundance. Other sources include soybeans, peanut butter, potatoes, or whole wheat bread.

* Iron: Iron helps our blood supply oxygen to our body. Deficiencies in iron have been associated with ADHD, learning disabilities, and lowered IQ. It stands to reason, then, that our reasoning skills could benefit from foods that contain iron. Find iron in foods like spinach, blackstrap molasses, lentils, tofu, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts.

* Vitamin E: Some stave off mental decline with a daily crossword or Sudoku puzzle. Foods with vitamin E could keep you sharp, too! Vitamin E, especially taken along with vitamin C, has been linked to reduced cognitive decline with aging. Take note of vitamin E-rich foods: mustard and turnip greens, spinach, and broccoli. And if green is not your colour, you can pop sunflower seeds, almonds, or olives for a dose of vitamin E.

We watch what we eat, but do we care what we give our kids?
September 24th, 2007 by Chris De La Rosa

So you’re in line to order at a fast-food joint with your children waiting patiently for that kids-pack with the burger, fries and toy. Yippee the toy!  You nervously look at the menu hoping to find something that’s not deep fried or covered in some sort of fat-laced sauce. After-all you’re on a diet or just like eating a bit healthy. Yep, there is a fresh garden salad that you can order and feel good about eating here. Don’t forget the low cal dressing to accompany the healthy choice you’ve made.

I’m sure you’ve seen this! As adults we make choices that’s supposed to be good for us, but are we making similar choices for those we’re supposed to care for?  Wait, you got the fruit juice for little “Jimmy” instead of the “coke with ice” so that makes it all good. Shame on you!

BTW why is it the coke with ice at fast-food joints taste so much better than the ones in the can out of your fridge?

Note: I’d like to pass on my congrats to my friend Steve and his new bride Julia. All the best for what the future have in store for you newly weds.

Why can’t healthy taste good?
January 4th, 2007 by Chris De La Rosa

They must be giving something away at the gym these days! With the start of the new year and all the resolutions it seems just about everyone is trying to loose weight or just get into some sort of “shape”. When we frist started to go to this health club back in early November 2006 the only really busy time would be around 11 am to 1pm (people who slipped in for a workout during their lunch break) and again at dinner time. Now no matter what time you go, it’s terribly busy… even at 11.30 pm last night when I left.

Since we started to hit the gym one of the things we’ve been trying to do is eat a bit healthier. Easier said than done! All the stuff I like seems to be stuff I should be avoiding;

- Chicken wings (deep fried)

- Chinese fried rice (yep fried again)

- Gravy in all forms

- Fried Chicken

- Jerk Chicken (with some skin left on)

- Never liked pop (soda), now I find myself wanting a pepsi

- Love my red meat (with butter?)
- Cream with my coffee

- Cheetos

- burger and fries

I’m sure by the end of the day this would be a massive list. So now my aim is to either find healthier foods to start liking or learn to cook the foods I like, healthier.
Have a great day!

Chris..

p.s. Now I have to build up the courage to get my prostate checked.
