Smile, it’s time for back to school shopping.
August 28th, 2008 by Chris De La Rosa

We’ve now spent 2 entire days combing through the malls and dark alleys for deals on back to school items for our girls. I’ve had enough! I feel as if I’m hung-over from a night of booze, dancing and all that follows those kinds of nights. We got home around 11 pm last night, pockets empty, energy drained and children still bitching that they didn’t get all they wanted. Too freaking bad!

Every year, around August and September, parents of young children face one of their largest single expenses: getting their kids ready for a new school year. They extend their budget for children’s clothes and school supplies, forgetting to plan ahead in the process.

Unfortunately, this expensive annual tradition has not been adapted to a time when there are more single parents and, in general, less money in the average family budget. That’s why it is more important at this time to be an informed shopper than ever.

Start by taking a thorough inventory of what you already have, and develop a budget for what you still need. Then, list each item in priority, from most important to least important. By having a prioritized, budgeted shopping list, it can be trimmed easily by cutting from the bottom.

The next step is to compare prices of different items. If a store five miles away is offering low prices on blue jeans, it may be worth the drive. Buy underwear, socks and other basics in quantity when they are on sale, making sure to allow for growth. Check as many newspaper advertisements and catalogs as possible before you finally make your purchases.

Another important strategy is to remember that what you buy is as important as how you buy. Basic, durable clothing will stretch your dollars significantly. Check for strong buttonholes, secure buttons, reinforced stitching, firmly woven or knitted fabric, and basic styles.

Some important things to remember about back-to-school shopping:

Children grow quickly. Look for articles of clothing with no definite waistline, like overalls. Blouses and shirts with long tails, as well as pants with elastic waistbands, also allow for kids to grow. Make shorts out of long pants, and short sleeves out of long sleeves, as your child grows. Also, straight-knit dresses make great tops for jeans, stretch pants, or skirts.

Kids like ‘easy’ clothes. For younger children, getting the best value for your dollar means buying clothes they like to wear. Look for articles they can manage without much help. For example, front openings, flat buttons, easy-to-reach pockets, elastic waistbands, and large necklines make it easier for kids to get dressed in the morning. Remember, the easier it is for them to dress themselves, the less stressful your mornings will be.

Save on school supplies. Before you run to the “Back To School” section at an expensive retailer, compare prices with lower priced outlets and office supply stores. You might find that the spiral notebook with the really colorful cover is more expensive and has less paper than the one with the plain cover.

Shopping for school clothes and supplies also gives parents a great opportunity to teach their older kids about spending habits. Sit down with your children and decide on a budget. Let them do the comparison shopping and point out that if they get the expensive sneakers, they have to cut back in other areas. Not only will they learn about smart shopping, they will value what you buy for them much more.

The most important strategy for Back To School shopping is to stick to the budget you set. Bring only as much cash as you need, based on your budget, and leave your credit cards at home (you’d think I would know this by now) . Shopping for less is a challenge, but with planning and forethought, you can prepare your children for another school year without breaking the family budget.

BTW, when I grow up I want to own a Hollister or Abercrombie store… that place is a magnet for teens and dungeon for parents alike. Quite honestly, this must be the “crack” of the new generation. EVERY friggin teen and their poor parents were in those stores!

Mentoring?

With all the emails I’ve been receiving lately, I’m seriously considering launching a monthly mentoring program. Where 1 lucky person will get to shadow me and all I do online for 30 days, but must be able to commit at least 2 hrs a day Mon - Fri for the full month. I’m putting things into place as I write this, to hopefully be able to launch this new mentoring program soon. I still have to decide what the basic requirements will be. Rest assured it will be 100% FREE!

And so it should be!

Ever since my post and many thousands online, the Canadian Olympic team is finally bringing home the metal! Last count this morning (after an exciting US vs Brazil soccer final) I checked the standings and noticed that Canada collected 14 medals to date. Well done! It’s about friggin time we stop hearing personal best and start seeing some real results.

Some pics from our recent day at Canada’s Wonderland…

Funnel cake - part of the park goers diet!

Ready to get soaked?

Tons of twisted steel makes up these massive roller coasters.

Hope you didn’t just have lunch..you’re going for a spin!

As you walk through the main entrance of the park. There’s a roller coaster that goes through that mountain and at certain times, there’s a team of divers that drive from the top to the pool below.

I telecommute from the tallest and fastest roller coaster in Canada.

Well not really, but this work at home lifestyle means I can leave when I want and do what I want..when I say! While most people were busy heading off to work, we were making our way to spend the day at Canada’s Wonderland to test their latest coaster, Behemoth!

Though I’d like to say that the work at home lifestyle allows me full control over when I can do “stuff”, I still have to work with Caron’s schedule. She’s a 9-5er, plus she takes the 1 car we own to work, so we usually plan stuff on her days off.

Over the next few days I’ll try to post some pics… in the meantime, here’s a short video I made while on Behemoth.

Here are some quick stats for you coaster fans…

Having fun is good for some. I like to win!
August 15th, 2008 by Chris De La Rosa

This post was supposed to be my rant about Canada’s dismal performance to date at the 2008 Olympics. We’re bombarded on the local media (CBC- great coverage btw) with words such as…

Personal Best also used as NEW Personal Best

Canadian record

Moved up 6 (replace with any other number) places

Instead I’ll post a couple screen shots I saw on the 2 popular sports networks in Canada. If I got into really voicing my opinion I’d probably be hammered with the usual…

- you don’t like it go back to where you come from

- we didn’t ask you to call Canada your home

- remember you showed up at our doorsteps

- this is our way of life, how dare you question it

Yea, the first response by people who supposedly welcome people to Canada… one of the greatest countries to live in? But they have all right to point out these things, since we live here for free and don’t contribute! Bunch of problem causing freeloaders we immigrants are!

Pic 1. Found on CTV Sportsnet’s website.

Pic 2. Found on TSN’s website.

Making money online, like life is about winning. No one cares about who came second… unless you live in Canada and wish for at least a freaking silver medal! Rowing finals can’t start fast enough.

Here’s an article I came across yesterday on the Canoe.ca website…

The vicious cycle of Canada’s lacklustre summer games performance has begun once again.

The scenario goes something like this: our 300+ athletes stream into the stadium during the opening ceremonies, all fresh-faced and full of promise. The ‘curse of the flag-bearer’ is thrown in for good measure.

And then we wait for the medals to start rolling in. Day one, nothing, day two, nothing, day three, nothing.

What we do get are numerous stories of ‘personal bests’ and ‘Canadian records’ at the games - but no medals.

These ‘bests’ are of course followed by our national media outlets with proclamations of ‘heartbreak’ and breathless pieces about how hard our athletes tried.

You know what? Try harder! The Olympics are not the place for personal bests - you can do that at your training pool back home!

Canada should be focusing on athletes/events where we have a serious chance to medal and forgetting about so-called dark-horse athletes and those that seem to qualify again and again but never make it to the podium.

The COC would be wise to take a page from its winter games ‘Own the podium’ plan for Vancouver/Whistler 2010. Focus on the winners, pare down our summer games contingent and starting bringing home the hardware.

Giving your blog the human element.
August 4th, 2008 by Chris De La Rosa

Fun-filled, jam-packed, overly tiring weekend. Yes, what an amazing weekend, capped off by my first win as coach for Tehya’s U14 girls soccer team. Their coach is away on 3 weeks vacation in England and he asked me to take over the team until he returns. Game time and we were 2 players short so I wasn’t looking forward to the next 70 mins. But the girls played with tons of energy and heart! We walked away 6-2 winners at the final whistle. Well done ladies, let’s hope we have a full team next week so you guys can actually get breaks.

Lesson learned - Give it your ALL when the odds are against you and you will get the outcome you desire.

Here are some pics I took on Saturday at the Toronto Caribana…

Blue Lady group?

Couldn’t get pass the fence, but the pics were still great. If you ever visit Toronto around the first weekend of August, be sure to attend the Caribana parade. An amazing day to experience the culture, music and food of the Caribbean. Can be a bit crowdy (between 1 and 1.5 milion people) but it’s probably the biggest cultural show/parade in North America where everyone can participate in some form or another.

So how was your weekend? Leave me your coments.
