The Principal Designer (PD) represents deep domain expertise and organization seniority. This role is modeled after our founder Hartmut Esslinger, and as such, the Principal Designer is expected to be an individual contributor who focuses on developing breakout innovation. This innovation typically occurs in the conceptual phase of the project, which is led by the Principal Designer.
The Principal Designer expresses a particular point-of-view or expertise (i.e., mobile, search, augmented reality, education, brand). The PD is also expected to be able to make sophisticated connections between multiple initiatives and frameworks. The Principal needs to be comfortable working independently in order to develop these narrative structures and strategies, but is also required to convey these insights in a digestible way to the team and clients.
The Principal Designer is based in a studio, but can operate in a consultative role throughout the organization. He or she is at the Associate Creative Director or Creative Director level in terms of experience and expertise. However, he is unlike the ACD and CD in that the Principal has no direct reports. The Principal reports directly to the studio CD or Executive Creative Director, depending on his or her level.
